It grows wild in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan, on the rocky slopes of the mountains, in the bushes and at the edges of fields. Occurs at height 700-2800 m n.p.m. The bulbs are spherical or slightly elongated, in diameter 2-2,5 cm.
Plants grow up to height 80 cm and very thick, stiff stems with numerous, densely embedded gray-green leaves. Dark flowers (in the number from 10 do 50), length 2,5 cm, are gathered in magnificent inflorescences.
This plant blooms in April and May. It grows best in sunny places, sheltered from the wind, in deeply cultivated soil, rich in nutrients.
